Did you know that hens can lay eggs without roosters? Without a rooster, a hen can lay eggs on her own! The average young hen around 1 year old lays about 300 eggs per year, which means that she lays an egg about every day!

As they get older, hens lay fewer and fewer eggs. By the time they are 4 years old, hens almost stop laying eggs. In addition, in the winter, when it is cold and the days are short, hens may pause in laying eggs.

Usually after laying a dozen or so eggs, the hen will start preparing them for hatching. The hen will stay on the eggs all day, even when she is sleeping. Only occasionally will she leave for a short time to drink, eat, or go to the bathroom.

Newly emerged from their shells, the chicks are wet and weak and need to stay under their mother's wings for warmth until their bodies are completely dry.

For the first 24 hours after they first come into the world, chicks don't eat or drink, relying entirely on the nutrients stored in the egg yolk. At around 12 weeks, the chicks will be able to live on their own!
