What are feathers? Feathers are like light, thin blankets that grow on a bird’s skin.
Why do birds need feathers?
To fly. Feathers on the wings work like little airplanes.
To stay warm. Feathers trap warm air close to the body, like a cozy jacket.
To stay dry. Special feathers keep rain out.
To look pretty. Bright feathers can help birds find friends or scare others away.
They have a hard stick in the middle called the “shaft.” From the shaft, lots of tiny, soft branches spread out—like a tiny tree!
Birds comb their feathers with their beaks. This is called “preening.” It keeps the feathers neat and clean.
Feathers are a bird’s best tool for flying, staying warm, and looking cool! If you also like feathers, you can follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to draw one!
