The lotus is a magical water plant with big, round leaves that float like nature's umbrellas and pink or white flowers that bloom like sunshine smiles! It grows in calm ponds and muddy waters, but stays clean and bright.
Starts as a seed buried in yucky mud. Its stem grows loooong (like a green straw!) through the water. The leaves unfold to float on the surface—perfect for frogs to nap on!
The bud rises up, then POP!—it opens into a gorgeous flower that closes at night and opens each morning.
In Asia, they symbolize strength (growing through mud) and purity (staying clean). Bees and butterflies love their sweet smell! Fish hide under its shade on hot days.
When the flower is tired, the yellow crown becomes dry and brown. Inside are round seeds. The seeds can sleep for many years and still grow into new lotus plants when they fall back into the mud.
The lotus grows in dirty mud, but it stays clean and bright. Here we are about to learn how to draw a lotus flower. It seems to float on the surface of the water, and you rarely see similar flowers!
