Look at this little bird! It is a sparrow. Sparrows are small, brown birds that live almost everywhere — in cities, in parks, and in the countryside.

This sparrow is fat and round! It looks like a little brown ball with feathers. Why is it so fat? Maybe it has been eating a lot of seeds and berries to get ready for winter. In winter, the weather gets very cold, and food is hard to find. So birds eat extra food in the fall to grow a thick, warm layer of fat. This fat keeps them warm and gives them energy when food is scarce.

This sparrow is also fluffy. Its feathers are soft and puffy, like a little coat of fur. Fluffy feathers trap warm air next to the bird's body, just like a blanket.
