A tarantula is a very big, hairy spider. It has eight legs and two main body parts: a head and a round belly. Imagine a spider as wide as a ruler—the biggest one can be almost 11in from one foot to the other!
Tarantulas live in warm places like South America, Africa, and parts of the United States. Most dig little burrows in the ground and come out at night to hunt.
They don’t make webs to catch food like other spiders. Instead, they sneak up on insects, frogs, or even small mice and give them a gentle venomous bite to make the prey sleepy.
Tarantulas look scary, but they are shy. If something scares them, they can kick tiny itchy hairs off their belly to say, “Go away!”
People keep some tarantulas as pets, and the girl spiders can live a very long time—up to 30 years!
